Walk on the Wild Side of Inch Island

via Donegal News

Nature lovers explored the rich ecosystem of Inch Wildfowl Reserve at a special biodiversity event.

Back in June 2025, Inch Wildfowl Reserve played host to a special outdoor event celebrating the island's remarkable biodiversity. The event, held on Saturday 7th June, brought together nature enthusiasts of all ages to explore one of Donegal's most important wildlife habitats.

A Day of Discovery

The event was organised through the 'Biodiversity without Borders' project, a partnership between Donegal County Council and Derry City and Strabane District Council. Supported by Creative Ireland as part of the Shared Island programme for Cruinniú na nÓg, it offered families a chance to connect with nature right here on Inch Island.

Participants enjoyed a range of activities led by local experts:

  • Birdwatching with Aengus Kennedy from Nature North West
  • Aquatic exploration with Frog CIC, discovering what lives beneath the water
  • Wildflower and bug spotting with Annie Mullan from Butterlope Farm

Rich Wildlife Habitat

Inch Wildfowl Reserve, situated on the eastern shores of Lough Swilly, supports an impressive diversity of birdlife. During breeding season, the reserve is home to terns, gulls, waders and ducks. In winter months, it becomes a haven for swans and geese, making it a year-round destination for birdwatchers.

The event featured a biodiversity trail along part of the reserve's 8km loop, with wild prizes for participants and goody bags for early arrivals.

Speaking about the event, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Niamh Kennedy, said it was "a fantastic outdoor family event" and part of 35 events across the county celebrating Cruinniú na nÓg.

Events like this highlight the natural treasures we have right on our doorstep here on Inch Island.
